METHODOLOGY

How volumetric mass is estimated

Dimensional or volumetric weight converts occupied volume into a weight-equivalent. ShipmentPrep requires the divisor explicitly and uses unrounded canonical volume.

Formula

Volumetric mass = shipment volume in the divisor's volume unit ÷ divisor

The dimensional factor depends on the carrier, service, route or agreement. Use the divisor specified for the shipment you are preparing.

Worked example

Carton	500 × 400 × 300 mm; quantity 10
Example divisor	5000 cm³/kg—not a default rule
Estimated volumetric mass	120 kg

What the result means

The result is an estimated volumetric mass for the divisor supplied. It does not predict a carrier invoice.
